The D-802K is Sony's car-oriented Discman from 1991 that continued the bridge concept between portable and vehicle use. It accepted four AA batteries or 9V DC power, added electronic skip protection and Mega Bass, and used a sturdy body with the mounting logic and accessories that made the most sense once the player spent more time installed in a car than moving freely from place to place.
Dedicated in-dash systems still had not fully taken over, so models like this had a very specific role to fill. The D-802K felt more resolved than the earlier car-leaning machines because the vibration problem and installation logic were now being treated as core design concerns instead of side cases. That gives it a much stronger reason to exist.
