The D-202 is a well-priced portable CD player from 1991 with strong sound, sensible controls, and a presentation that still leaned more toward audio seriousness than lifestyle gadgetry. It carried some of the character of Sony's earlier enthusiast-oriented machines into a more approachable package without the cost or status of the true flagships.
This model sits right near the end of one Discman mindset before the line leaned harder into skip protection, slimmer bodies, and everyday mobility. The D-202 still was a machine for people who judged portable CD mainly by how it sounded and how solid it felt in use. That helps explain why it aged so well.
