The D-475 represented one of the clearest late-period endpoints for the classic Discman formula, combining ESP, optical output, Mega Bass, and a compact, well-resolved body without introducing any dramatic new ideas. It felt like a machine built after most of the major problems had already been solved, which gave it a quiet confidence a lot of earlier players never quite had.
That maturity is really the point. The D-475 is part of the stage where portable CD had largely stabilized and the best models no longer needed to announce their cleverness. It is one of those machines that feels complete because there is so little left to fix.
