YP-ER20

The YP-ER20 is part of Sony's youth-oriented YP line and uses the "Grill" design theme to make a simple cassette player feel more visibly playful and current. It combined auto-reverse playback, Mega Bass, and lightweight plastic construction in a compact body built for easy everyday use instead of for feature complexity. The whole machine was clearly aimed at younger casual listening habits.

This model sits in the part of the late cassette story where Sony was no longer trying to keep the format alive only through better playback machines. The ER20 suggests the other strategy: keep cassette culturally present by turning it into a youth-market object with attitude, color, and low friction.
