YP-ER12

The YP-ER12 continued the same youth-focused ER cassette-player formula with a lightweight body, simple playback controls, Mega Bass, and a compact plastic form meant for casual daily use. It remained stripped of most of the feature logic that defined the EX and FX lines, keeping the machine closer to a portable youth accessory than a "serious" Walkman in the older sense.

That difference is the whole point. By the mid-1990s, Sony is no longer treating every cassette player as part of one prestige ladder. The ER12 is proof that the cassette category had become broad enough to support sub-brands built around mood and audience more than hierarchy.
