The WM-SXF44 is part of the most electronically complete Sports Walkman of 1993, combining a digital synthesized FM/AM tuner, LCD display, Dolby B noise reduction, Mega Bass, auto-reverse playback, anti-rolling support, and automatic volume limiting inside a reinforced body meant to survive movement and outdoor handling. It runs on two AA batteries and brought the Sports line much closer to the feature level of Sony's mainstream radio Walkman than earlier ruggedized models had managed.
Here the Sports branch stops feeling like a compromise. The SXF44 reads less of a toughened offshoot and closer to a full-features Walkman that simply happens to be built for active use. That makes it a very useful marker for how mature and integrated the Sports family had become by the early 1990s.
