The WM-J501 is a limited-edition variation on the compact auto-reverse WM-501 playback Walkman, distinguished mainly by its oversized square cassette viewing window and compact-run cosmetic treatment. It retained the same core playback mechanism and battery system as the standard model, but the enlarged window changed the visual balance of the machine enough to make it feel more overtly styled and display-oriented. The underlying engineering remained familiar.
This model also suggests Sony occasionally treating even relatively everyday compact Walkman as canvases for visual variation and desirability. Not every special edition had to involve radical hardware changes to make sense in the market.
