The WM-GX51 is a more electronically managed version of the GX50, keeping the same stereo-recording cassette platform but replacing the analog tuner with a digital AM/FM tuner and preset memory. It retained the EX recording head, Dolby B noise reduction, Mega Bass with 2x expansion, auto-reverse, external stereo microphone support, and LCD display inside a compact laying-style body that felt more resolved and more integrated than Sony's simpler standing recording Walkman.
Where the GX50 still is a recorder with radio added, the GX51 was a fully packed personal audio workstation from the cassette era. It sits right at that point where Sony was trying to make portable recording behave with the same convenience and control as its more advanced playback machines. It one of the ends up more useful for it GX models of the period.
