The WM-FX101 is an entry-level radio Walkman built around the simplest form of Sony's mid-1990s FX formula: analog FM/AM tuning, cassette playback, anti-rolling support, and automatic volume limiting inside a compact plastic body powered by two AA batteries. It avoided Dolby, digital tuning, and most of the sound-shaping features that would have raised its cost or complexity, leaving the machine very plain but easy to live with.
This kind of player becomes more revealing precisely because it is so ordinary. The FX101 sits in the part of the Walkman story where Sony was still maintaining basic radio-and-tape portability for users who did not need anything more ambitious than that.
