WM-EX655

WM-EX655

The WM-EX655 was a high-end playback model built around an aluminum-alloy body with a diamond pattern stamped into a matrix structure, giving the case noticeably more rigidity than earlier midrange EX models. Sony used this construction to improve impact resistance and everyday durability while preserving the compact dimensions expected from a late-generation player. Auto-reverse, Dolby B, Mega Bass, AVLS, AMS track search, and remote control were all present, with power supplied by either a rechargeable gumstick cell or a standard alkaline battery.

It shows Sony still taking the physical object seriously even in the twilight of the cassette. The EX655 was not about reinventing portable listening, but about making a mature Walkman feel stronger, more complete, and more confidence-inspiring in daily use. It belongs to the late phase when material quality itself had become part of the value proposition.

The WM-EX655 combined a durable aluminum shell with shock-absorbing Express material that raised impact resistance by nearly threefold, giving the player a tougher build than most basic models of its period.

It was also the first entry-level unit to include a remote with an LCD, which made everyday control easier without pushing the model into a higher price tier. The WM-EX655 brought durability and remote-based control into the entry-level Walkman range, extending features once reserved for higher-end models.
