The WM-8 is a straightforward playback-only Walkman released for the North American market and closely related to the Japanese WM-9. Its compact vertical plastic body runs on four AA batteries and includes dual headphone jacks, manual tape selection, and basic mechanical controls. This model was visually and mechanically simple, with only minor market-specific changes separating it from its Japanese counterpart.
The WM-8 did not need to introduce anything new. Instead, it suggests that Sony had already begun adapting even simple Walkmans region by region as the format moved into broader retail channels. It is the kind of solid, unshowy player that helped turn the Walkman from an idea into an ordinary North American consumer product.
