The WM-70 was the North American version of the compact WM-50 and one of Sony's smaller playback-only Walkman models of the period. It used a rounded metal-reinforced plastic body, ran on a single AA battery, and kept the controls and tape handling deliberately minimal, with a manual tape selector and a physical form that sat comfortably in the hand or pocket. Compared with the sharper, more mechanical feel of earlier models, the body was clearly shaped with daily carry in mind.
The push toward miniaturization continued even outside the most famous super-compact branches. The WM-70 was not as radical as the WM-10 family, but it still points toward the Walkman becoming less intrusive and more naturally portable. It was designed to disappear into routine.
