The MZ-R501 is an entry-level MiniDisc recorder in the R series, designed for direct recording without PC connectivity. It features line input and optical digital input, supporting recording from external audio sources, but all recording is done in real time. MDLP allows for extended recording time, and the group function supports long-duration recording management. Recording levels can be adjusted digitally or manually. However, it lacks a microphone input and remote control; all operations are concentrated on the unit itself. Power is supplied by a single AA battery, resulting in a configuration close to the original, simple operation of MiniDisc.
