The D-E01 is a portable CD player equipped with a slide-in disc loading mechanism and G-Protection. It features a metal exterior and a remote control display mechanism and does not have a hinged cover. Playback is within the range of a standard CD player. Its structure and operation system are modified. It is positioned as a higher-end model with specialized features.
The D-E01 arrived near the end of the Discman era, built to show how far the format could be pushed before portable audio shifted toward file-based playback. Its defining change was G-Protection, a more advanced shock-resistance system that steadied playback during movement by stabilizing the optical assembly rather than relying on short memory buffers.
A slot-loading mechanism set it apart from every other Sony portable CD player. The disc slid into a front opening, leaving the exterior fully enclosed and giving the unit a clean circular footprint.
Full-size discs worked normally, while 8-centimeter singles required an adapter, making the process less fluid. The silver housing used a metallic composite common to late-nineties high-end models, with polished controls, a matching remote, and a weight that kept it among the lighter Discmans of the period.
The focus stayed on stable playback, not display. Connectivity included an optical digital output and MD Link, making it a stable source for MiniDisc recorders.
