The D-828K is an updated car-oriented Discman from 1993 that added ESP buffering and digital signal processing while keeping the slimmer profile and ignition-sense logic of the earlier in-car models. Sony also offered both wired and wireless remote options, which made the machine feel less of a compromised portable and more like something designed with vehicle use in mind from the start.
The years just before dedicated in-dash systems took over produced some of the strangest and most interesting Discman offshoots. The D-828K is part of the point when that compromise had become much more deliberate and technically thought through than it had been in the late 1980s. It still lives in-between categories, but not awkwardly.
