The WM-WX50 is a wireless cassette Walkman that paired a compact player body with a dedicated headphone receiver, continuing Sony's attempt to make cord-free listening practical without relying on unusually specialized batteries or overcomplicated system design. It offers auto-reverse playback, Dolby B noise reduction, Mega Bass, anti-rolling support, and straightforward cassette handling inside a compact plastic body powered by standard AA cells. Compared with earlier wireless efforts, it was noticeably more grounded and usable.
This model is Sony was trying to domesticate one of its stranger branches. Instead of treating wireless listening as a futuristic stunt, the WX50 reads like an effort to make it boring enough to work in everyday life. That alone makes it interesting. Sony was simplifying the concept instead of abandoning it.
