The MZ-E10 was a flagship MiniDisc player that pursued extreme thinness and compactness. Its magnesium body was exceptionally thin for its time, and it used a built-in lithium-ion battery for power. In addition to a digital amplifier, it featured an equalizer, virtual surround sound, and pitch control. It also supported bookmark playback. The dedicated 3mm headphone jack was another feature that symbolized this thorough compact design. Operation was primarily via the remote control.
The MZ-E10 pushed MiniDisc toward extreme miniaturization, serving as a limited, anniversary-era design that showed how far a playback-only unit could be reduced. At 9.9 millimeters thick with a custom three-millimeter lithium-ion cell, it delivered full MDLP support in a body closer to a compact metal object than a conventional audio device.
The chassis was cut from a single sheet of magnesium alloy and machined with tight tolerances. The circular lid and defined edges contrasted with earlier, softer plastic designs, while the precise fit around the disc window and controls emphasized structural accuracy and minimalism.
Internally, the mechanism used a custom layout. Sony reworked the MDLP optical block so the pickup could move directly through the shutter, reducing overall height while maintaining stability.
The drive operated with low mechanical noise, and most interaction was handled through the in-line remote, leaving the main body largely untouched. Positioned as a premium playback model, the E10 reinforced the separation between recording units and E-series players, focusing on size and material execution rather than expanded functionality.
