D-601K

Car Discman First Generation
D-601K

The D-601K built directly on the D-600 but shifted the emphasis toward in-car use. The electronics stayed broadly similar, while the packaging added mounting hardware and installation accessories so the player could live inside a vehicle instead of move between environments. Early anti-rolling measures also started to matter here in a way they did not on a desk or bedside table.

Sony is still adapting portable CD hardware into cars before dedicated in-dash designs had really caught up. The D-601K belongs to that short-lived phase where the same platform is expected to serve both domestic and automotive roles without being fully purpose-built for either. It feels very transitional, but in a revealing way.
