D-5500

My First Sony
D-5500

The D-5500 is a My First Sony compact disc player from 1993 built in a larger, colorful plastic body with a carrying handle and simplified controls aimed squarely at children. It kept basic CD playback intact while making the machine feel physically approachable and durable enough for rougher handling than the standard Discman range is ever expected to tolerate.

By the early 1990s, compact disc had already spread far enough into ordinary life that it could be reformatted for entirely different audiences. The D-5500 was part of the same shift as the earlier child-focused models, where CD playback stopped feeling tied to adult hi-fi culture and started becoming part of the general household. That change shows up clearly here.
