D-40

Pocket Discman
D-40

The D-40 continued along the same path as the D-20 but leaned further into refinement. The chassis remained compact and straightforward, yet the finishing and detailing felt more considered, hinting at the growing separation between entry-level machines and the more polished middle of the range.

The line had already stopped chasing a single ideal of portability by then. Some buyers wanted the smallest thing possible, while others wanted something that simply felt a little better made and easier to live with. The D-40 sits comfortably in that second category.
