D-101

The D-101 is an accessible portable CD player from 1991 that occupied the sensible middle of Sony's range without chasing flagship drama. It offered the expected basics in a more modern-feeling body, with Mega Bass, straightforward battery operation, and the kind of simple control layout that benefited from several years of Sony learning how to make competent Discmans at scale.

By this stage, the line had reached the point when even the more affordable players could feel settled in their own right. The D-101 belongs to that early-1990s middle ground where Sony was no longer improvising the category and could simply build a complete machine at a reasonable level. That was part of what makes these models more interesting than they first look.
