Discman

Discman in 2005

A visual guide to Sony’s Discman lineup in 2005, the early post-mainstream phase of portable CD.

In 2005, with mainstream demand largely gone, Sony still offered occasional models for the users who remained committed to portable CD. The lineup reflected a category that had settled into a smaller, specialized role.

D-EJ002

D-EJ002

The D-EJ002 is part of the most stripped-back late portable CD players from 2005, built around the absolute basics of the format with two AA batteries, standard audio CDs plus CD-R and CD-RW support, and G-Protection for stable playback during ordinary movement. It included only Mega Bass, resume, a hold switch, and a simple top-mounted control layout. By this stage, reduction was part of the point. The D-EJ002 was part of the part of the late market where some users still wanted exactly this kind of straightforward disc playback and very little else layered on top of it.

D-EJ011

D-EJ011

The D-EJ011 is a basic portable CD player from 2005 that stayed close to the same formula, with a compact AA-powered body, standard CD, CD-R, and CD-RW playback, and G-Protection for everyday use. It remained pure CD-only, with no remote, no compressed-audio support, and no real attempt to appear more advanced than it is. That kept it useful in the places where basic portable CD still made sense. The D-EJ011 is part of the long tail of the format, where familiar functionality mattered more than keeping up with where the broader industry had already gone.

D-EJ720

D-EJ720

The D-EJ720 is a slightly more balanced late CD-only player from 2005 that ran on two AA batteries and handled standard CDs plus CD-R/RW discs with G-Protection in a body whose controls and battery life felt a little more settled than the lowest-end machines. It stayed focused on straightforward disc playback without trying to stretch into anything else. That gives it a clearer everyday role than the bare-minimum models. The D-EJ720 is part of the part of the late lineup where Sony is still making a proper portable CD player instead of just the cheapest possible one.

D-NE320

D-NE320

The D-NE320 is a compressed-audio CD Walkman from 2005 that had fully absorbed file playback into the core experience, with support for ATRAC3plus, ATRAC3, and MP3 alongside standard CDs so one burned disc could hold far more music than a conventional album. G-Protection, practical battery life, and simple file navigation kept the machine usable without much extra complexity. By then, compressed-disc listening no longer needed to be sold as a transition. The D-NE320 was part of the stage where large burned libraries had become an ordinary part of portable listening and the player simply had to support that cleanly.

D-NE720

D-NE720

The D-NE720 is a more flexible compressed-disc CD Walkman from 2005 that built on the same foundation with MP3 and ATRAC support, a remote for easier navigation, and enough connectivity to fit comfortably into a larger late Sony listening setup. It stayed practical for both commercial albums and large homemade compilations. That gives it a slightly broader role than the simpler models. The D-NE720 is part of the layer of the line where the disc format is still being treated as something worth integrating instead of just maintaining.

D-NE730

D-NE730

The D-NE730 is a slim premium compressed-disc CD Walkman from 2005 that used a rechargeable gumstick battery, added a digital amplifier, parametric EQ, and Clear Bass, and carried a more deliberate physical finish than the simpler AA-powered models. It supported ATRAC3plus, ATRAC3, MP3, and standard CDs with stable G-Protection. This is part of the clearest signs that Sony is still trying to make the disc experience feel refined instead of merely practical. The D-NE730 is part of the part of the late line where sound tuning and build quality still mattered even after the basic utility of the format had already been solved.

D-NE830

D-NE830

The D-NE830 is a mature compressed-disc CD Walkman from 2005 that refined the formula into something more complete and easier to live with while supporting ATRAC3plus, ATRAC3, MP3, and standard CDs with a remote for navigation and display. It kept the whole experience stable and predictable for both commercial albums and large homemade compilations. By this point, the file-capable idea had been worked over enough that it no longer needed novelty or dramatic styling to justify itself. The D-NE830 was part of the stage where the format simply needed to feel smooth and coherent.

By 2005, Discman was no longer fighting for the center of the market. These years preserved the format for collectors and enthusiasts, even as its broader influence lived on more across Sony’s portable audio line.
